They help you when you open or close the lid, lid and hatch. When you lift or lower heavy things, they relieve the load. But they almost never appreciate their efforts. What are these neglected workers? They are gas springs and dampers.

Gas springs are heavy steel bodies that hold pressurized nitrogen. Barometric pressure forces extend the chrome or nitrite coated steel shaft to assist in lifting or opening. Piston assembly, seals and hydraulic oil complete the entire package.

Load capacity and extension speed depend on spring size, gas pressure, mounting configuration and ambient temperature. The dimensions of these components can be as small as 5 inches long and can be as long as 36 inches in length.

The friction-stopped gas spring holds the load in place using a hand-tightened jam nut. The nut applies friction to the piston rod and holds it within the selected extension.

Although the power supplied by the spring varies with the conditions of use, it is related to the internal pressure P1 and the manner and location of the spring installation. Depending on the diameter of the rod and tube, the initial P1 value of the spring can reach 15 to 450 pounds.

Designers can choose accessories and options for their own application. However, installing hardware that is adaptive to load weight and center of gravity is crucial.

The size and pressure of the gas spring are important, but the end connectors and mounting hardware can also have a significant impact on spring function and life.

Gas spring changes include those that are locked open or have multi-position friction nuts that allow the operator to work safely under heavy loads. Designers also have the choice of springs that allow the installer to adjust gas pressure, stainless steel structures for corrosive or sterile environments, and other materials and assembly parts that offer varying degrees of service life and reliability.
